Easy and Festive Ideas for the Holidays
The holiday season is all about creating warmth, joy, and bringing people together. But decorating for Christmas doesn’t have to cost a fortune. With a little creativity and some budget-friendly ideas, you can transform your home into a festive wonderland without overspending. Here are some easy ways to decorate using thrifted finds, DIY crafts, and everyday items you already have.

Thrifted Treasures: Finding Hidden Gems
Thrift stores and flea markets are great places to find unique Christmas decorations on a budget. Vintage ornaments, festive dishes, and candle holders are just some of the treasures you can discover. These items often have a charm and character that you can’t buy new.
What to Look For:
- Vintage Ornaments: Look for glass or wooden ones with a timeless look.
- Festive Table Settings: Holiday plates and glasses add a special touch to family meals.
- Candle Holders and Lanterns: Clean them up, and they’re as good as new.
Quick Tip: Use old picture frames to create seasonal photo displays. A quick spray of gold or silver paint makes them pop.
A few weeks ago, I ventured to the thrift store and a few yard sales on a Saturday morning and lucked out with the things I found! I found a beautiful red, plaid throw, candlesticks made from yarn looms, holly berry mugs, and an Annalee mouse that is so perfect for my Christmas decor!
DIY Ornaments: Simple and Special
Another idea that adds charm and saves money is making your own Christmas ornaments. It is not only affordable, but also a chance to add personal meaning to your decorations. Even simple crafts like drying orange slices or tying cinnamon sticks can make beautiful accent
Easy DIY Ideas:

- Dried Orange Garland: Slice oranges, dry them in the oven, and string them with twine. They smell amazing!
- Cinnamon Ornaments: Make dough from equal parts cinnamon and applesauce, roll out, and cut into Christmas shapes with cookie cutters. Use a straw to add a hole to hang the ornaments. Air dry or in a 200 degree oven until stiff. Hang with twine or ribbon.
- Recycled Cardboard Ornaments: Turn old cardboard, paint, and scrapbook paper or pictures from magazines into eco-friendly decor.
- Sea Shell Ornaments: Create ornaments with seashells, newspaper or wrapping paper, and modpodge. Drill hole and hang.
Some of my favorite ornaments from the tree this year:
My family has been making ornaments for YEARS. In fact, it’s a family tradition to decorate our tree with homemade ornaments. One year, my son and his friends decided to create all of the ornaments out of clay and in the shape of male anatomy. They insisted that we have a “dick”mas tree and thought that it was hysterical. As the mom, it was equal parts hysterical and mortifying when we had guests, but it’s definitely a Christmas crafting night that we won’t forget!
Popcorn Garland: A Cozy Classic
A popcorn garland is a timeless, budget-friendly way to decorate. It’s easy, fun, and perfect for family activities.

How to Make It:
- Pop some plain popcorn.
- Thread a needle and carefully string the popcorn. Add cranberries for pops of color.
- Hang it on your tree, mantel, or anywhere you want a rustic touch.
Story Idea: Share a childhood memory or the first time you tried making popcorn garlands with your own kids. What made it memorable?
Recycled Glass Jars: Simple Elegance
In addition to the popcorn garland, empty jars from your pantry can be turned into magical Christmas decor with minimal effort. both projects use simple materials to create a big impact.
Quick Projects:
- Candle Holders: Fill jars with Epsom salt, paint jar with oil based paint pens, and add a tea light.
- Mini Snow Globes: Add faux snow, a small figurine, and seal it up for a charming display.
DIY Wreaths: Budget-Friendly Beauty
Making your own wreath is an easy way to save money and personalize your decor. Use natural materials like pinecones or branches, or upcycle items like fabric scraps or book pages.
Wreath Ideas:
- Pinecone Wreath: Glue pinecones onto a wreath frame and add ribbon.
- Fabric Scrap Wreath: Tie leftover fabric strips onto a wire frame.
- Book Page Wreath: Roll pages from an old book into cones and arrange them in a circular pattern.
- Cardboard, Newspaper and Paper Bag Wreath: Create a frame out of cardboard and attach flowers and leaves made from newspaper and paper bags.
We just started a new tradition this year and my mom and I made a wreath out of paper bags, newspaper, and cardboard. I added decoupage birds and felt. It was unique and FREE to make.

Holiday Lights: Magical and Affordable
String lights are one of the easiest ways to add holiday magic and to light up all your thrifted and DIY decor. Use what you have and find creative ways to display them.
Ideas for Using Lights:
- Fairy Lights in Jars: Place small lights in mason jars for a glowing centerpiece.
- Light-Up Garlands: Add string lights to popcorn garlands or greenery for extra sparkle.
We use string lights for our nighttime lighting in our home. I can’t stand turning on our overhead lights, so we have them in jars and even in the bottom of the fireplace for a cozy glow.
Making Christmas Special Without Spending a Lot
The holidays aren’t about how much you spend—they’re about the feeling you create. Whether it’s hunting for treasures at a thrift store, making simple DIY ornaments, or reusing what you already have, there are so many ways to decorate on a budget. The best part? These ideas add a personal, heartfelt touch to your home and don’t contribute to more waste in the environment.
